Our Interview with Miss Abdulkarim

Today (Friday the 10th February 2012) 4 of the DCS Student Journalists (Emily, Phoebe, Maisie, Sam) made their way to the Girls Gym, ready to do a short interview with Miss Abdulkarim. A female PE Teacher from our school, and a HUGE inspiration to us all!

We all know that the Olympics will be arriving in London soon. And there has been something different this year. This year certain people have been given the chance to carry their own Olympic Flame for the Olympics. A ONCE IN A LIFE TIME OPPORTUNITY!

So Miss Abdulkarim and Jack Waring (a student from DCS) both got chosen from our school to carry the flame. They were chosen from the entire school by people who picked them in particular as somone who inspires them and someone who is one of a kind, who goes that extra mile. So Miss Abdulkarim and Jack got chosen as an inspiration to our school communtity. We all hope that they have the time of their lives!

From then on the Student Journalists made their way to the Girls Gym where we all met Miss Abdulkarim. We cracked on and got interviewing! We prepared a script with lots of different types of questions to ask. Things like Miss Abdulkarim's sportive life and obviosuly our main reason why we went down there... The Olympic Event she will be parcipitating in.

We finished interviewing Miss Abdulkarim, and it all went smoothly, we got all the information we wanted to know. We managed to get facts from Miss like "approximately how many sports/activities have you been involved in" and "what do you have to do to prepare to carry the Olympic Flame? " By the end we collected some interesting facts about Miss Abdulkarim, and overall us Journalists enjoyed the experience a lot.

And from this we all wish Miss Abdulkarim and Jack Waring all the best and good luck for the big event! :)

Ever Wondered Why Zebra's Have Stripes...

Ever wondered why zebras have black-and-white stripes? Well here is the explanation why...
Well, a group of scientists think they developed them to keep away blood-sucking flies. As strange as this may sound, but this is all true....
Researchers put out different coloured models of horses in a field - one brown, one black, one white, and one with black-and-white stripes.
The model with black-and-white stripes attracted the least number of
flies.
The team thinks the stripey pattern is a turn-off for flies, because of how it reflects light.
There have been loads of ideas about why zebras have stripes. Some scientists think it's to confuse predators when they're in a group. Another theory is that zebras use the stripes to recognise each other!

Pensioner Saves Neighbour

A pensioner admitted that he never set eyes on his 'reclusive' next door neighbour before pulling him clear of his burning home.

Howard Evans, of Spinney field, Moorgate, dragged semi-conscious Adrian Edwards out of the front door of his semi-detached home as a fire raged in the kitchen, just yards away. But he admitted that it was the first time he ever set eyes on his neighbour for over a year, adding "He barely leaves the house. He's something of a recluse."

Howard dashed to Mr Edwards' aid when he heard a loud bang shortly after 9pm last Thursday. He said: "It must have been the ceiling caving in. I came as fast as I could and found the front door ajar. He was laid on the floor just inside, semi-conscious. I got him clear of the house, dialled 999 and wrapped him in jumpers and blankets to keep him warm. The fire brigade didn't take long to arrive but it felt like an age."

Paramedics took Mr Edwards to Rotherham Hospital where he was treated for the effects of smoke. Howard said that the fire, which he understood was started by a overheated wiring, had been "absolutely gutted" his neighbours kitchen. He added: " There's nothing left of the kitchen and there's no gas, electricity or anything. I'm sure he will be ready to come out of hospital soon but there's no way he can come home, really There's no way he can live there now."Fire fighters who attended the blaze were able to prevent the blaze from spreading from the kitchen.

A Pensioner, Who Is 'To Sick To Feed Him Self', Was Filmed Playing Golf.

Albert Davies, a pensioner who claimed £30,000 in mobility benefits because he was "too sick to feed himself", was filmed playing an 18 hole round of golf.

Recorder Benjamin Nicholls, sitting at Stafford Crown Court, yesterday described the scam as a "deliberate swindling of the benefits system".He sentenced Davies, of Stephens Road, Walmley, Sutton Coldfield, to a ten-week jail sentence, suspended for 18 months. The pensioner was also made subject to an electronically monitored curfew for three months.

Recorder Nicholls said he had only "just" been persuaded not to impose an immediate jail sentence. He added: "He cheated the taxpayer, he cheated those who make genuine claims... It was thoroughly dishonest."You have disgraced yourself, you have brought shame on your family."Davies had pleaded guilty to dishonestly failing to give prompt notification of a change of circumstances for benefit purposes and to dishonestly making a false representation for benefit purposes.

Trevor Meegan, prosecuting, told the court the OAP had initially made a genuine claim for Disability Living Allowance in 2004, as he suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. But in 2010 Davies was secretly recorded carrying his clubs, changing his shoes and playing golf.Mr Meegan said once Davies had completed the nine-hole course without a break he would "go around again".The pensioner was charged with falsely claiming disability allowance for five years, claiming a total of GBP29,705.25."The victim in this case is the taxpayer," said Mr Meegan. "These crimes are very easy to commit and difficult to detect."

Recorder Nicholls said: "It must have been as plain as a pikestaff being able to do all of these things on the golf course that you were in no way entitled to the highest level of disability living allowance."Darren Whitehead, defending, said Davies had received a "revolutionary" drug in 2005 which helped ease his symptoms. He described him as a man of previous good character who for most of his life had "led by good example".Mr Whitehead added Davies felt "shame" for what he had done.

Snow For Some, But Not For Others.

Although the recent snow fall for this year has been a relief for most people, after last years bumper fall, other people have had a bad time in the snow and ice that is still falling.

A potentially treacherous mixture of snow, sleet and rain is set to sweep across much of the north on tonight, causing fresh chaos for the country’s transport networks. In Cumbria there have been a massive 97 crashes in the last SIX hours!!! Some lorry's as well have ended up in ditches or turned over due to the bad weather and icy conditions.

Forecasters warned travelling conditions would remain "difficult" across much of Britain with ice potentially creating havoc for drivers as many parts still recover from last weekend's snowfalls. A Met Office spokesman said: "There is an ice risk caused by freezing rain and drivers are urged to be extra careful on the roads." She said northern areas particularly at risk included Cumbria, Northumberland, the Pennines and into Scotland. Meanwhile further snow is expected on Thursday, with up to four inches falling across much of southern Britain.

Forecasters warned temperatures in southern areas will struggle to remain above freezing throughout the week and into the weekend, with the mercury in some areas plunging overnight to as low as -13C.The north, meanwhile, will remain significantly warmer with temperatures as high as 8C.

Cat invades football game.

A cat invades the football match (Liverpool vs. Spurs) on the 6th February.

The feline made it's appearance after only eleven minuets into the game! This caused the game to stop and the Spurs goalkeeper to Shepperd it towards the touch line.

After a minuet long delay the cat reached the touch line and was then escorted out of the stadium by some Anfeild stewards.

Even though the cat only had one minuet in the spot light, it was enough to make 17,000 people on Twitter follow the account @Anfieldcat.

But the question that is on every one's mind is, How did the cat get in the stadium? and then how did it get in the middle of the pitch?

But i think that cat must have had a nice time meeting Spurs goalkeeper and Anfeilds stewards.

'The King Is Dead' : How Princess Elizabeth And The Nation Heard Of The Monarchs Passing.

It is 60 years since Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne, a date which marks a defining era in British history. Though the milestone is a reminder of the Queen’s long reign, it is also an opportunity to look back at the nation in mourning after the death of her father, King George VI.

George VI, revered for his conduct as the British monarch through dark days of the Second World War, died in his sleep having suffered from lung cancer. The King had said goodbye to his daughter for the last time a week before his death, as the Princess set off with Prince Philip to tour Australia. Stopping off at Kenya along the way, the pair heard of the King’s death on 6 February 1952. They returned home the day after the shock announcement, with new Queen Elizabeth II stepping off the plane at London Airport dressed in black.
Mourners lined the streets outside Buckingham Palace after an official statement was given from Sandringham at 10:45am, with similar images seen across the country.

Headlines simply stated 'The King Is Dead'- no embellishment needed for the grave announcement. The Cabinet assembled as Winston Churchill was informed of George VI's death, the Prime Minister later stating that, "We cannot at this moment do more than record the spontaneous expression of grief."

Churchill was later pictured with anguish as he left the Accession Council meeting, automatically summoned on the death of the King. The Prime Minister's sombre mood reflected that of fellow politicians who joined in mourning of the monarch- Leader of the Opposition Clement Attlee suspending party debate on foreign policy as a mark of respect. Attlee, leaving the Accession Council, is seen visibly shaken by the news.

Though politicians and family members close to George VI knew of his ailing health, the British public were more taken back by the news which had come suddenly on a damp February. Despite the knowledge that the King's health was declining daily, the Royal Family will still dealt a massive blow when he was found dead in bed by a servant. The new Queen, pictured below returning to Clarence House from London Airport, showed rare glimpses of sorrow as she digested the news with Prince Phillip.

The Queen's Proclamation of Accession was read two days after in various locations across the UK, with huge crowds gathering predominantly in London. With that the Queen was officially sworn in, full coronation coming for Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June. A new monarch for Britain, still reigning 60 years on.
