What To Do In An Emergency...

If you need help quickly, or in the case of an emergency, you should ring 999. These calls are free, from any telephone (home phone, pay phone, card phone or mobile phone).
An emergency is when:-
  • Someone’s life is at risk
  • Someone is injured
  • There is a fire
  • Offenders are nearby
  • Immediate action is required
For home phones, pay phones and card phones, lift the telephone and press 999 on the keypad.
For mobile phones, press 999 on the keypad and then the ‘call’ button (you can still do this if the keypad is locked and even if you have no credit on the phone).
Your call will go through to an emergency telephone operator. They will ask you,
“Which emergency service do you require?”
Ask for the service you need:
  • Police
  • Ambulance
  • Fire Service
  • Coastguard
They will then connect you to the Control Room for the service you have asked for, in whichever area you are phoning from. The emergency services operator will then ask you a few simple questions:-
  • “What has happened?”
  • “What is your name”?
  • “What is the number of the telephone you are calling from?”
  • “Where is the incident?”
  • “Is anyone hurt?”
You might be asked other questions to help the operator assist you more quickly. Whilst they are speaking to you, they will also be giving the information to the officers or paramedics who will be on their way to help.Try not to panic and don’t speak too quickly; just answer the questions as calmly and clearly as you can. If you follow these simple instructions without any hassle then your emergancy will be seated to more quickly and more safely than it is when you don't follow these instructions.

Pixarthon A Great Success!

On Friday the 11th of May until the Saturday the 12th of May, Dinnington Comprehensive School held a Pixarthon to raise as much money as we can for Bluebell Wood Hospice and the Canada Tour Trip.

Students could either come in comfy clothes like PJ’S or they could come in fancy dress (a character off a Pixar film) to be in with the chance to win the fancy dress contest. The event started at 5:00pm on the Friday and lasted to 3:00pm in the afternoon on the Saturday. During the Pixarthon, students from DCSCH could stay up all night and day and watch back – to – back Pixar films, (with breaks for meals). The films we watched were; Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, Up, A Bugs Life, Cars, Cars 2, Wall E, Ratatouille and the Incredibles.
Also during the event, there were 3 competitions you could enter, they were a fancy dress contest, a contest where there was a sheet of paper with Pixar characters from different films and you had to name all of them, and lastly there was a contest where the teachers/helpers from school hid pieces of paper with a Pixar character on it around a certain part of school and you had to go and find them all. All the results were collected in and we are now awaiting on the results of who won each contest.

If students couldn’t keep their eyes open, they wanted to get away from the noise or if they just needed a break for a bit, there was a room where students could go to do any of these. Overall all of the students had a great time, everybody enjoyed themselves and we all were absolutely shattered by the time it finished because quite a few people didn’t go to sleep at all during the full 24 hours of films!

But how about you... Has your school ever done anything similar to this? What is your favourite Pixar Film? Feel free to post your comments!

Games have new age ratings

The Government has said that this new system for game age ratings in the UK is "simpler and stronger." Games are now being age rated by the Video Standards Council (VSC), before this they were rated by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). This means that for the first time, anyone under 12 selling a game rated age 12 could be facing jail. The Pan European Game Information system (Pegi) are still contributing to the rating and saying whether the games have: bad language, violence etc. The VSC will now rate games to Pegi's specifications while enforcing compliance among retailers. However these ratings do not apply to games bought online.

Canines Yawn When Owners Do.

A study shows that when a owner yawns, the dog will yawn if it heard the owner yawn.

Even if the dog doesn't see the owner yawn, it will copy it as long as it hears it. But they will do it more often if they hear the yawn from some one they know. The research showed that the dogs had empathy to human behaviours. For the study 29 dogs were selected that have lived with their owners for at least 6 months. They then record the owners yawning and the play it back to the parents. They then recorded a strangers yawn and played it back to the dogs. The dogs sat two sessions a week apart and the number of yawns for each noise was monitored. The study said nearly half of all dogs yawned when they heard a recording of a human being making a yawning noise .

The Weather And The UK

At the moment the UK has been having some very strange weather! One day it seems to be sunny but then further on in the day it decides to chuck it down with rain and begin a thunderstorm!
Now I’m sure for all those kids out there in the UK, you will surely be disappointed in the weather because you all want to get out with your mates down to the parks/skate parks or whatever you get up to in your spare time. But you can't because of the weather! Well... Sadly your disappointment will have to continue as it looks like the UK will be having this strange weather for a while. When you think it’s going to be a nice day because it warm in the morning, so then you decide to go out with your mates, then later on when you’re all out, enjoying yourselves, the weather decides to turn and the next thing you know.... A THUNDER STORM! Half an hour later you come back home with your hair dripping and your clothes drenched!

People in the UK probably all wish that we could have weather like America or any other hot place in the world, but we should all find ourselves lucky. The UK is a rather unique and special place to live, we can have extremely hot days, and then we have extremely cold days. We have a whole range of weather here in the UK, we have it all. From rain, to snow, to hail, to floods, to thunderstorms! So think about those countries not as lucky as us, for example countries like Egypt. They barely get drops of rain there, and they must gag and plead for the weather we have. And it’s the other way round for us; I bet most of you would love to live where it’s always hot so you can get a tan and sun bath!

Well if that's the case, you should all count yourselves lucky! We have a very special weather range here in the UK, I know that we don’t have the hottest weather or (gladly) the coldest but we should all appreciate that when we are all stuck inside our homes, absolutely bored because it throwing it down with rain outside, and there’s nothing to do.  Just think of the countries around the world that wait and plead for their days of rain to come.  It just comes to conclude doesn't it!? There's just one word that describes us.... LUCKY!
How about you? What do you think about the weather you are having at the moment? Is it nice or is it bad? Please feel free to leave your comments below.

Should schools ban phones?

Smartphones

A school inspector says he wants children banned from taking their phones into school, so does the top country's school inspector. Apparently kids are disrupting the lessons by texting, surfing the web or taking calls. Most schools allow mobiles as long as they are kept in your locker or switched off but there are already some schools which do not allow them. This ban might be happening because teachers say that they are often kept on and used in lessons.

What do you think?

Should phones be allowed if they are switched off, or should they be banned?
Do people use them in class? Do you or your friends take your phones to school?

Let me know what you think, comment below.

'Ghost town' being built in US to test new technologies

Terrorism security systems and the latest technologies such as renewable energies are in process to test out the 'ghost town' which is being built in America.

It looks like a normal city with roads, houses and buildings - but no one will live there.
Artist's impression of a 'ghost town' being built in America to test new technology

It will cost around £600 million and is being built  in Lea County, New Mexico. Scientists want to use it to see the effects of new technology in a 'real world' setting. Behind the project is a Big tech company, Pegasus Global Holdings. Anything from next-generation and smart grids wireless networks to self-flushing toilets could be tested in the new town.

Robert Brumley from Pegasus said, "The only thing we won't be doing is destructive testing, blowing things up - I hope,"

At the end of June, the work begins!

The Royal air force fighter jet's planes and helicopters are practising a fly over the Olympic stadium if there is any threat to security on the big days.

The Defence Secretary Phillip Hammond reckons that there is nothing to worry about regarding the security at the Olympics by saying, "There is no specific threat to the Games but we have to be ready to assist in delivering a safe and secure Olympics for all to enjoy."
