RSPB Shocked By Buzzard Plans!!

Plans to capture wild buzzards and destroy their nests - to help protect pheasants -  have angered the RSPB. The government's are trying to find ways to stop the UK's most common bird of pray from targeting pheasants for its food. However the RSPB's charity has called the idea of taking wild buzzards into captivity and destroying their nest's ''Totally unacceptable ''. Buzzards are protected and there has been a big increase in their numbers over the past  15-20 years. Around 40 million pheasant birds are relished for shooting game each year. Many game keepers think that buzzards have a harmful effect on pheasant shoot. But the RSPB claims that the buzzards only play a small role in the amount of game bird losses. A goverment  spokesperson said it was looking ''to find ways of protecting these young birds (pheasants) while makeing sure the buzzards population continues to thrive.'' 

  

Winners of song writing awards!

Adele has been awarded the best song writer of the year while Ed Sheeran has won best song award.Adele's song rolling in the deep was the 'most performed work' of 2011 and Sheerans The A- Team was named best song for it's music and lyrics. Adel has so far achived global sales of 18 million of her second album 21. Ed Sheeran said he was shocked to win an Ivor Novello award for best song musically and lyrically for The A Team because he thought that Adel would win!

Ed Sheeran Comes To Bluebellwood.

The famous pop star Ed Sheeran made a Maltby girl's dying wish come true.

Abigail Fleming passed away from cancer on the 3rd April  but not before Sheeran had performed for the youngster at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. The pop star made a secret visit to the hospice to see Abigail after seeing her story in the Dinnington Guardian and receiving a video message from the 14-year-old.

Abigail’s parents Richard and Maria this week spoke of their ‘fantastic, loving and kind angel’ who put everyone else before herself.

Abigail wrote a wish list which included meeting and seeing Ed Sheeran perform and having a 16th birthday party, despite being 14, when she was told that her cancer was terminal.

“He didn’t just make her day, it made her life,” said Maria.
“It was his only day of. He flew in from Paris to London and then caught the train to Sheffield         
"Abigail gave him a card and a key ring to say thank you.”
“He gave her a bracelet which somebody had given him for his 18th brithday.”

“He was a complete gentleman and she really loved it.”

Ed makes lego models after his gigs and has agreed to donate the proceeds of the sale of the models at auction to Bluebell Wood, as well as agreeing to become an ambassador for the North Anston-based charity.

Maria and Richard were full of praise for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, where Abigail spent the last few weeks of her life.

Jedward Do It Again!

For the second year running the Irish duo Jedward have made it into the Eurovision Song Contest final. They're among the 10 acts from Tuesday's semi-final to go through to Saturday's final in Baku, Azerbaijan. The twins performance of there song waterline included a giant fountain on stage, but no trade line quiffs!
Afterwards Jedward then admihtted that they were worried ''people wouldn't recignise us without our hair''. Tey were the last act to dicover they'd made it through - and celabrated by doing cartweels on stage!
Last year Jedward finished 8th with there entry Lipstick.

Giganitic turtle found, 60 million years old

A few days ago, a gigantic turtle fossil was found. It is said to be around 60 million years old!

The fossils show that the turtles head alone was bigger than a regular human head, it was around an amazing 24cm! And its shell was 172cm long, about the average height of a grown man. It is sa8id to have had really powerful jaws. 

"We had recovered smaller turtle specimens," said Edwin Cadena from North Carolina State University (who discovered the fossil in Colombia). "But... I realised that this particular turtle was the biggest anyone had found in this area for this time period."

Smaller turtles did exist at the same time as dinosaurs, but this giant version appeared five million years after dinosaurs had vanished from Earth.

Animal Testing!

Why does this happen?

The British law states that any newly found drugs MUST be tested on at least two live mammals. This must consist of a large non-rodent type animal.

This procedure is to make sure the drug won't harm humans but is it fair that the animal has to test it first? Animal testing has also been used for:

• Household products
• Agricultural chemicals
• Industrial chemicals
• Pesticides
• Paint
• Food additives

In some country's animals are even being used to test beauty products, but this is illegal in Britain.

Does it work?

Well, since animals have different bodies to us and we react to different things the testing the scientists do is not always helpful.

Animal testing has been used to help develop vaccines against diseases like measles, rabies and mumps.

Drugs to fight the effects of HIV and cancer rely on animal tests to find new treatments.

Operations on animals have successfully helped to develop organ transplants and open-heart surgery techniques.

 

What about the animals?

In the UK laws protect all lab animals from cruelty during testing and all labs are inspected regularly to make sure that the tests are being carried out properly.

However, campaigners against animal testing say these controls have not stopped some scientists from abusing animals.

Tinned Hedgehog?

A hedgehog that had been stuck in a can has been nursed back to health! He was discovered by a couple on the roadside on a street in Norfolk earlier this month. They couldn't get him out but decided to cut of the end of the tin, so at least he  could breathe!

Alison Charles from the RSPCA has said that if that friendly couple had not found the poor little creature he would've died! He suffered minor injures but is being nursed back to health and will soon be ready to be set back out into the wild.

"This again highlights the dangers that litter can pose to wildlife," said Alison. So, this shows that we all need to take care of the Earth and all the things on it! incidents like this can easily be prevented by just remembering to pick up they're rubbish and also to squeeze cans together before throwing them away.

So, remember to recycle

Hedgehog Had a Tinfastic Day :-)

A hedgehog with was found with his head stuck in a tin of carrots has now been nursed back to health. He was discovered on a road side
e by a couple from in Norfolk earlier this month. They couldn't get him out so to help him breath they cut of the end of the tin. Alison Charles from the RSPCA said the Hedgehog would have died if he had not been found when he was. He suffered  miner injuries but is now making a full recovery. Alison said that '' This again highlights the dangers that litter can pose to wildlife,''
she then went on to say '' Incidents like this can easily be prevented if people just picked up there rubbish ... remember to squeeze cans together before trowing them away so no wildlife can get hurt.'' 

Ticket Blunder For The Wanted!!!!

Fans of The Wanted have been left devastated after a big blunder by a ticket company meant they were wrongly told they had passes for the bands free Olympic concert.
Thousands of people were originally told they've won tickets for 2012 gig in Birmingham via email only to then be told that there had been a mistake. The company that had actually been running the ticketing website had accidentally told every one who had applied that they'd been successful, rather than just the 20,000 who were. A new ticket ballet for tickets will be opened, which means the fans who thought they'd been successful will have to reapply. The concert is to celebrate the arrival of the Olymic torch relay in the city.

Hero Police Dog!!

A hero police dog that survived a stabbing attack while on duty has been awarded for his bravery.
Aman from Suffolk police was helping  with a mans arrest when he was badly hurt last year. He was knifed several times as he grabbed on the man's arm, but he still carried on. The German Shepperd has since recovered on is continuing to work with his handler, who was also injured in the attack.
Now Aman's been named 'Hero Service Dog' at the dogs Trust Honours 2012.

550 Cats?!?!?!

An Isralite man had a divorce to his wife after she brought  550 cats to their home! The man told Rabbinical Court that there was so many cats that it was imposioble to sleep at night! He also claimed that the cats wouldnt move off of the beds onto the floor. Also he complained that the cats prevented him from using the bathroom in the house and making it neer impossible to prepare a meal. This is a quote he had said 'When I sat down to the table to eat the cats jumped up and stole my dinner!' The court asked if the couple could reach an understanding with them but she refused to get rid of them, prefering not to have her husband and she would rarther have her feline flock!

Mobile Sim To Beat Bullies

A new sim card, launched by Belmio will allow parents to monitor thier children's phones and set restrictions on what they can and can't use. It works in almost any phone and parents can decide who can and can't contact you in school, and sometimes can restict you from going on the internet during school!!!

Parents can also read text messages if they are concerned about thier child being bullied. It isn't an app, so you can't swich it off. But it never blocks you from calling your parents, even if you have ran out of credit.

Some of the features are designed to block bullies horrible messages, Simon Goff, founder of the service said "The majority of networks say that if you are being bullied, change your number. But with belmio, you can just block thier numbers."

Stuntman flies without parachute.

On Wednesday the 23rd of May, wingsuit stuntman Gary Connery completes high helicopter jump. 

Luckily this brave man landed safely from a very high helicopter jump. Gary Connery, a 42 year old man completed the stunt wearing a specially developed wingsuit. For safety there were 18,600 cardboard boxes for Gary to land on after flying 1.4km through the air. The boxes were prepared as it only took about 50 seconds before he landed.  

The moment Gary landed. 

Gary's worked on films like Batman Begins and Indiana Jones and has  already completed about 880 skydives. Luckily the weather was fine when he took the risk. I said this because if the stunt wants to happen safely, the weather conditions had to be just right - otherwise the cardboard boxes could have blown away. Shockingly he is the first person to jump without a parachute from such a great hight. 

This is Gary's test run - he dropped at about 80mph, faster than cars on the motorway.

"Tonight will be all about celebrating with friends and family," he said, shortly after completing the jump.

"Tomorrow I will be plotting my next daring challenge!"

The Hunger Games 'District 12' Up for Auction

The eerie, run-down textile mill in North Carolina used to replicate District 12 in the newly released blockbuster 'The Hunger Games' will be put up for auction this July, with a staggering estimated price of over $1.2 million (£759,000). Owner Wade Shepard, 83, has become 'overwhelmed' with the crowds of people coming to see the location of filming, and is listing the land in the Profiles is History Auction House (which specialises in auctioning Hollywood memorabilia.).

It's new - and rather wealthy - owner will recieve access to all 72 acres, which include 22 buildings, woodlands, hills and ponds. The land is currently listed on the official North Carolina Tourism website, promoting a four-day Hunger Games tour, although the visitors are not allowed into the buildings. It is not yet clear how the new owner will use the land.

'The Hunger Games' is a Sci-Fi/Action movie, where 24 children (2 from each of the 12 districts) are sent to the Capitol to compete in a survival-of-the-fittest reality TV show broadcast across the entire nation of Panem. Katniss Everdeen takes the place of her sister Prim, and immediatley becomes an unlikely contender. Prior to it's release as a film, 'The Hunger Games' was a trilogy of novels written by Suzanne Collins. Both the books and the film have enjoyed worldwide sucsess, reaching 56th in the worldwide box office (despite the recent March release.), as well as pushing into the Amazon Kindle Million Club (recognising authors who have sold over 1 million paid digital copies.).

Facebook to change age rules?

We all know that the legal age to use Facebook is 13+. However, there might be a slight change to that age rating as it gets further into the year. This is what might happen…

Young people UNDER the age of 13 may soon be allowed to join social networking site, Facebook. Until now, only people over the age of 13 have been allowed to sign up to the website.

However, Simon Milner, Facebook’s head of policy in Britain, has said that the age limit should be reviewed. This is because there are many under 13s who have already signed up by saying they’re older than they are, often with their parents’ permission. Mr Milner says: “A lot of parents are happy their kids are on it.” Other people think that it is important that Facebook has a minimum age, to protect young people from cyber bullying and other online dangers.

A boy at the age of 3 dediced to take his scooter for a ride but ended up in busy crossroads during rush hour. Luckily, a police officer spotted the little boy and took him to safety. The todler was saved and was taken back to his grandfathers. Apparently the naughty todler was in the toilet when he snook off!

Hurdles mix up.

Jessica Ennis - A sportswoman from Sheffield was "annoyed" at the "massive, massive mix up" as the event organisers set up a 100m hurdles race incorrectly as they missed out the last set. Not only was it the first race after she discovered that she was selected for GB for the 2012 Olympics but it was also the race she beat her personal record with 12.75 seconds but it could not be counted!

Nova International, the people in charge of setting up the event, said they were looking into how the mistake happened.

Google Funds Computer Teachers.

Google's chairman Eric Schmidt said money would also be given to purchase "teaching aids, such as Raspberry Pi's or Arduino starter kits".

He said that without investment in the subject, the UK risked "losing a generation" of scientists.

Mr Schmidt had also previously criticised the country's ICT curriculum.

He had also said the UK was "throwing away its great computing heritage" by focusing on using software rather than how it was made.

The comments, which were delivered last August at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, prompted education secretary Michael Gove to revamp the curriculum to involve programming and other technological skills.

CCTV footage from a US store captured the shocking tale of a backfired prank, which ended with a young infant trapped inside a spinning tumble dryer for over a minute before being freed by a member of staff. The couple involved were loading a tumble dryer, however when the woman's back was turned the child was placed into the machine by the other partner. Little did he know that shutting the door would activate the auto-lock and begin the cycle.

Panicked, the couple furiously tugged at the door as the dryer began to pick up pace. The man rushed to get assistance, while the woman was left with the sight of her child whirling around inside the deathtrap. The power was turned off, and the couple retrieved the baby after the horrific and potentially fatal incident. According to sources, the video achieved over 26,000 hits on YouTube.  Hopefully, this lucky escape will teach others not to be so hasty in putting your child in danger. Or indeed inside a tumble dryer.

Strict 'Two Fly Rule' to be Enforced in China

Authorities is Beijing have recently announced new measures to assess the cleanliness of it's currently unpleasant public toilets, and are implementing a 'two fly rule' in the Chinese capital. The guidelines state that no public toilet should have more than two flies inside at any one time, though it does not go on to say what punishment would be issued should a third fly be found. This comes after the hygiene standards were criticised during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

These new rules are to be put in place by the Beijing Municipal Commission of City Administration and Environment, and also include standards for litter (no more than two items, both of which must be removed from the premises within half an hour), odour and signage. Questions have been raised over whether officials will count the number of flies inside the toilets and, inevitably, will it actually improve the quality of the Chinese lavatories?

Wi-fi with T-rays?

Wi-fi is the one thing that no one can live without. Whether it's accessing the internet or sending an e-mail; it will always be there. But at times it gets painfully slow. Just a click away from winning a game and suddenly your wi-fi connection has been lost. All that is about to change.


Researchers in Japan, the country best known for high-tech gadgets, have smashed a world record for data transmission speeds in terahertz. The data rate was astonishingly 20 times higher than the best wi-fi standard. The lower frequency band are usually much slower and harder to connect to. Internet consumers are hungrier by the minute for higher data transmission speeds wherever they go. This has now become a goal for manufacturers to make sure they meet their customers demands. T-rays lie between microwave and far-infrared technology regions of the spectrum; they are also unregulated by telecommunication agencies. The T-rays make use of very high frequencies, from 300 gigahertz; which is 60 times higher than the current wi-fi standard, to 3 Thz.

Terahertz penetrate through materials like x-rays, they do deposit less energy but make less damage in the process. Before, objects with T-rays were very bulky, however, this is about to change. Researchers are developing smaller devices which contain T-rays, allowing easy holding of the device. No more wi-fi problems then, or maybe?

Fast Memory - Silicon?

The World is thirsty for new gadgets and we need to find new, faster ways of storing memory. Everyone relies on their computer chips to store important data, but it does get quite slow, doesn't it?

Ever wondered what computer chips might be made of in the future? The wait is finally over for some of us, researchers have revealed a new way of making computer chips,out of silicon. They have called it a Memristor, an electronic component which is highly suitable for faster and much denser memory. The name comes from mixing memory and resistor; the resistance in the chip changes depending on how much current is being passed through; and it apparently remembers the value even after the device has been turned off. Amazing.

It took over 30 years to bring this product to reality, with the first ever prototype being unveiled in 2008. Since then, there has been a huge interest in the Memristor. The European Materials Research Society say that it can be made very cheaply allowing the company to make more profit for less money. What will they think of next? You will have to use your imagination for that one...

Hot or Cold?

The weather this spring wasn't exactly the nicest. Cold winds, rain and even snow in the Scottish highlands. Due to this; the emergence of bugs, like butterflies, was highly delayed.
Bugs depend on the temperature and weather to know when to come out of 'hibernation'. This is not the best thing to rely on in the UK. One day it might be freezing and the next it might be more than 20 degrees.

Remember the warm weather in March? Some species emerged early because of this. In April it turned extremely cold again forcing the bug species to either go back into 'hibernation' or die. The Met Office say that April 2012 was the wettest on record since 1910. The United Kingdom received about 126.5 mm of rain. Experts were particularly concerned  about the honeybees; they will not forage in cold weather and therefore might starve. However, the invertebrate population, such as slugs and snails, will benefit from this kind of weather as they like the rain. Have you noticed that when every time it rains, there are slugs and snails around?

If this kind of changing weather continues then it might lead to population crashes in some species of bugs. Imagine what life would be like without bees. No one would be able to pollinate the flowers, leaving them to die. On the other hand, it would be ok for some of us because there wouldn't be anything that can sting you while you have an ice cream in your hand. What type of weather will hit Britain next? We will be relaying on the Met Office to warn us and hopefully bring more good news; 'the warm weather will continue for the rest of summer'...

2012, the Year for Apple?

As everyone might know, Apple is one of the worlds biggest companies; selling millions of products every year. The March quarter seemed to be surprisingly successful; partly because the iPhone 4s and the new iPad were released. Here are some numbers for you:

Revenue            -                $39.2 billion

Net Profit          -                $24.7 billion

Gross Margin       -         47.4% compared to last years 41.4%

35.1 million iPhones were sold in the first quarter, along with 11.8 million iPads, 4 million Macs and 7.7 million iPods. Those are big numbers! Apple have stores worldwide and if they continue making new astonishing products then there's no doubt that their sales will be much, much higher. 

"We're thrilled with sales of over 35 million iPhones and almost 12 million iPads in the March quarter" Tim Cook, Apple's CEO stated. "The new iPad is off to a great start, and across the year you're going to see a lot more of the kind of innovation that only Apple can deliver." As the speech states, we will most definitely see a lot more of Apples innovation over the next couple of years, as the demand for high-tech gadgets increases. Apple will most certainly be the company to watch out for...

How does the Olympic flame stay alight?

Do you know how the olympic torch stays alight through the relay? 


The CBBC news round keep asking this burning question. The flame started its mammoth tour round Britain on Friday the 18th of May 2012 and ends in London for the exciting opening ceremony on 27 July. BUT the question is how will it stay alight for all those trips around the country, braving whitewater rapids, whizzing on zip wires and even being taken up windy mountains?

How's the flame kept alight on planes?

Two seats to itself, and a bodyguard- luxury.

It will be kept in a lantern, which has been allowed to go on a plane. It'll have two seats to itself, accompanied by a police officer who has been trained in firefighting. 

What happens to the flame at night?

Security guards from a special protection team will watch the torch whilst it's placed in a lantern. (Too keep it safe). 

What's the fuel used to keep it burning?

It's gas - a mixture of two-thirds propane and one-third butane.

Olympic torches auctioned on eBay!

Now listen to this! We all know that carrying the Olympic Torch is a once in a life time opportunity, so when you actually get chosen to carry it and represent your country, I'm sure you wouldn't just go and waste your torch by SELLING IT ON EBAY!

Well, one of the first Olympic torches used in the Olympics relay to carry the flame across England has been sold on eBay for £153,100! ----------------------------->

It's a privlige and an honour to carry the torch and then get to keep it after as a prize possession. But for people to just chuck it on Ebay and make some money out of it, is just rude! Just think about the talented people who spend months to make these spectacular torches so the people who carry them could use them and take them home, to find that they waste it and sell it on Ebay just isn't right!

It was said that in May, there would be forecasts for snow and extremely cold temperatures, they even said it could be recorded as one of the coldest May's the UK has ever had!

Buutt... This doesn't look like the case anymore! This week, the weather has made a change for good, as it has been forecased for the UK to be blazing hot all week! Today we had highs of 27 degrees! This is very good weather for us considering that last year we had lows of like -8 degrees! This weather is very warm for the UK! And I'm sure lots of people will be out and making the most of it!
