Language Success Stories At DCS

Self Generated

We all have many dreams of what we want to do and be when we are older. There are thousands of different careers out there which are available to you, and just about anyone can apply for them! We all are different and we all lead different lives so obviously we all have different ambitions, some of us want to be in the Army, some of us wants to work with animals, work in salon service, hospitality, the police, health and social care, etc… It’s unbelievable just what is out there!

However, although you may study in one country, one day you could easily leave to do work experience in another country. Or even to live there! The people you are about to read about all left Dinnington Comprehensive School to either study language at University or they left the country (UK) to live in Spain or France where their second language of Spanish or French came in useful for a new job…

Chloe Smith:

“My name’s Chloe Smith and I left Dinnington Comp in 2009. At A Level I studied Spanish, Maths and Geography.

I’m now in my final year at the University of Leeds studying Spanish and Management. After my first year at university I spent the summer living in Tenerife and working in a Spanish restaurant and last year I lived in Andalucía for a year teaching English to primary school children.

During my year abroad I got to travel all over Spain and meet people from all over the world. After coming back from my year abroad, and realising that I don’t want to be a teacher at all, I returned to do my final year of uni and applied for jobs and next year will be starting work in London as a management consultant.

I would recommend learning languages and doing them at university as it opens up so many opportunities and really makes you stand out from other people! It also gives you more options when you finish university, even if you don’t want to work with languages there are so many other options and doing a language and a year abroad really gave me lots to talk about at interviews.

And one of the most important things for me is that knowing other languages gives you the chance to travel so much. After saving up through university I’ve booked flights to go travelling round South America this summer which I wouldn’t be as confident doing or have the contacts I have if I didn’t study Spanish.”

Neil Froggatt:

“Neil Froggatt, left DCS in 2001, studied a French degree in Leeds, then a Translation Master's degree in Sheffield.

Now living in La Rochelle, France, as a self-employed translator, worked in a French university as a language assistant for 2 years which was fantastic!

I would recommend languages because they open up lots of opportunities for travel, work and meeting new people. It’s a complete myth that everyone in France and Spain can speak English!!”

Matt:

“Hello, my name is Matt, and I've recently graduated from the University of Leeds with a 2:1 degree in Spanish and Classical Literature.

I left DCS in 2008 and started a 4 year course in Leeds. On my 3rd year, as a Languages student, I had the opportunity to attend university in Madrid, Spain. The year abroad was the best year of my life; I got to experience another culture and language separate from England, I became much more independent, and I met loads of new friends from places such as Germany, Poland and Turkey.

Being a Languages student also greatly helped in landing me a position as an Assistant at the Paralympic Games. My language skills and the skills I'd developed abroad were the key factors in gaining the position. I worked with the Estonian delegation, accompanying athletes, translating and working in London, in an amazing atmosphere.

None of this would have been possible if I hadn't have done a Languages degree, which has turned out to be the best decision of my life. Demand for languages in the workplace is increasing every year, so it's an incredibly important degree to possess.”

Rebecca Tunstill:

“Rebecca Tunstill, left DCS in 2012, studying Spanish at the University of Chester.

I would recommend languages because it has helped me to meet a lot of new people and it can also take you down lots of different career paths.

I also get to travel as part of my course, for example I'm going to Madrid in February and I also have a whole year abroad in my third year!

I couldn't imagine not having taken a language at Dinnington as I wouldn't have even considered going to university if I had not done Spanish A-Level and achieved the success I did.”

Hester:

“¡Hola! I’m Hester and I graduated last year with a degree in Spanish and Italian.

I left Dinnington Comprehensive in 2008 after receiving G.C.S.E and A-Level qualifications in both Spanish and Italian and also a certificate in Japanese for business.

Following my time at Dinnington Comprehensive, I went on to study a 4 year Spanish and Italian degree course at Bangor University. During my time there I was given the opportunity to move abroad and live in the Spanish city of Salamanca whilst continuing my Spanish and Italian studies at the prestigious Universidad de Salamanca which was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had! Since graduating, I have continued using my language skills and I now work in a Secondary school.

Learning a foreign language raised my confidence and whilst I was abroad it gave me more independence. My language skills allowed me to really immerse myself in the culture of Spain and made visiting many Spanish cities such as Madrid, Segovia and Ávila so much more fun as I was able to communicate well with the local residents and learned much more about their traditions.

I would recommend learning languages because it is really exciting and rewarding being able to travel, knowing that you can communicate well in a foreign language. It raises your confidence and the range of skills that you acquire means that a language student is often more employable. Modern language skills therefore open up a world of work opportunities both at home and abroad. Language graduates go on to work in a variety of professions including teaching, translation and interpreting and tourism, but equally, there are many linguists that do invaluable work for the government in the Secret Intelligence Service- you could even work for MI6!”

All of these students have had success stories from taking a language at GCSCE and choosing to take it further into college and University. Taking a language has a HUGE benefit when you come to applying for a job, whether you are in the UK or abroad. If you can speak another language like Spanish or French, you will have a higher possibility of getting into a more qualified and experienced job because you can speak a client’s language if they didn’t speak ours so it is a bonus if you can speak a different language. Even if you only know a several lines and words will help you when you are older. The world is a big place with many different people, religions, beliefs and languages so it is always good to have a different language on your side.

Perrie Confronts Zayn!

It has been said on the radio and on websites that Zayn Malik from One Direction cheated on his girl friend Perrie Edwards from Little Mix while he was at a house party.

The person that Zayn has been accused of cheating on Perrie with is called Blonde Courtney, known to her friends as CJ. CJ ,21, said that when she asked him if he was single he said that he was. She was first introduced to Zayn when she went to the party at his mansion she said that it 'looks like a fun house'. As the night went on she said that Zayn was drinking vodka and having a laugh, she also said that he 'was a nice guy and that they were talking about music and playing songs on his iPad he even gave me a jumper when I said I was cold. At about 5am CJ took said she walked her friends outside to a taxi and she said that when she walked back in that Zayn cornered her and said ' you're really fit, you're really hot you're really beautiful'. She said that while she was sat in front of the fire place that Zayn kept giving her looks as though to say 'come to bed'. CJ then went on to say that he asked if she wanted to go upstairs and watch a film but that when he tried turning it on the projector didn't work, (which she thought was suspicious) she then said that Zayn said lets go and chill in my room. While Zayn was sleeping CJ said that she took pictures of him before she found out what the real score was with Perrie.

I don't know what you think but in my opinion CJ could just be making it up that she slept with Zayn, because she said that he was drinking a bottle of vodka so when he was saying that she was really hot and that he could have easily been drunk because when you drink vodka it stays in your system for hours (don't worry I haven't tried any to test). Also she can't say that 'the projector wasn't working, it was probably something to do with Zayn' because how does she know that it was Zayn the projector might not have actually been working because they don't work all the time. Also when she took them pictures of Zayn she could have easily have sneaked into his bedroom and took the photos. So there is a chance that Zayn didn't actually cheat on Perrie. But I do hope that they work things out because I think that Zayn and Perrie make an amazing couple!!!

So will it be:

Or

Apple Introduces 128GB iPad

Many people have been craving a storage update for the iPad. To their delight, Apple have just introduced a new version of the iPad 4th generation with a Retina display. The new iPad will have 128GB of internal storage available, as well as the usual 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models. The wi-fi model will cost $799 and the wi-fi & LTE model will cost a massive $929 which is very close to the price of the MacBook Air. These are the prices in the US - Apple haven't yet put the new iPad model on their website, so I am not able to confirm the prices in the UK. But, what I do know is that it WILL be expensive.

Sadly, the iPad Mini isn't getting this storage update just yet. However, Apple are expected to announce a new iPad Mini with a Retina display and bigger storage later on in the year together with a redesigned iPad, but these are only rumours at the moment. From what the firm have said, this new model of the iPad with a larger storage capacity will be exactly the same as the others. This model will go on sale on the 5th of February, but will it attract big crowds?

iOS 6.1 Released

When iOS 6 was first released it didn't get the expected 'thumbs up' from the public. Many improvements needed to be made, including an update to the maps application. However, iOS 6.1 is now available to download. After four beta versions, the final update has been released by Apple, to the relief of customers. But is it all that we wanted?

The update is available for the iPhone 3GS and later versions of the iPhone, iPad 2 and later versions of the iPad, iPod touch 4th generation and later versions of the iPod Touch. It takes about 5 minutes to install on the iPad mini and may take longer on older devices. Here are the improvements and bug fixes that Apple have made to the software:

  • LTE support for more carriers (there is a complete list of supported carriers at www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/)
  • You can now purchase movie tickets through Fandango with Siri (USA only)
  • iTunes Match subscribers can now download individual songs from iCloud
  • There is a new button to reset the Advertising Identifier
For information on the security content of this update, please visit this website: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222

Although most iDevice users were hoping for a Maps update, there is no sign of one at the moment. It looks like we will maybe have to wait until iOS 7 for that to come. There aren't any 'visible' updates to the new software but there are a lot of bug fixes which improve the whole user experience. What will Apple do next?

Apple Users Angry at Google

Apple's browser, Safari, is one of the most used web browsers in the world - it's in a close competition with Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer. Millions of people from around the world use the Internet daily, whether it's for checking the latest news or shopping online; but everyone wants some privacy, don't they? Recently, a group of Safari users have claimed that Google has dodged Safari's privacy settings and installed cookies, which track their movements on the Internet. The cookies enable Google to place appropriate adverts on webpages by looking at which websites an individual has been visiting. This has caused the Safari users to launch a campaign against Google over privacy terms, and one person has gone as far as beginning legal proceedings against the worlds most used search engine.

Google has committed this 'crime' before. In 2012 the US Federal Trade Commission fined them $22.5m for the exact same actions as this time, which of course don't please the public. It looks like the firm haven't learned from their previous mistakes. Google's chairman, Jon Leibowitz, stated that all companies must "keep their privacy promises to customers." Yet THEY breached Safari's privacy terms, making many customers unhappy. If the firm are doing this to Apple's browser, then all the others, like Firefox, must be at risk from this too. Apple might once again send Google to court themselves over this incident, in a battle to prove that Google had not been following Safari's privacy terms, therefore angering the majority of iDevice users. From where things stand at the moment, Google want to prove to the world that they are innocent over this scandal and have only been trying to provide their users with appropriate advertising. However, as everyone knows from past incidents like this, it's better to not get on the wrong side of Apple, as you might find yourself wishing you have never angered the world's leading technology firm.
